  18. Section 1.  -  Setting up your system and the BBS so as both systems
  19. ----------     can communicate.

  23. 1. Is April / TrapDoor the only software available which I can use to 
  24.    set up a point system on my computer ??
  25.  
  26.    - No, there is a lot of different software which can do this, there 
  27.      are Off Line Readers (O.L.R.) in which you log on to the BBS as 
  28.      normal, and ask the system to prepare all the mail packets which 
  29.      you requested.  Once prepared, the mail packet is downloaded as 
  30.      you would normally do.  The O.L.R. separated the mail packet into 
  31.      individual messages and presents them to the editor / tosser so 
  32.      as you can read your mail, and write any messages.
  33.  
  34.      There are similar programs available to April, namely SPOT.  
  35.      April and Spot do the same basic job, they are a combined 
  36.      Editor / tosser, this makes the need for an O.L.R. unnecessary, 
  37.      although some people prefer to use O.L.R's other than this 
  38.      method.

  41. 2. Ok, I've got AmigaPoint_2.1, so what do I do now ??

  83.      Read the file 'Setup.doc', this details the basic operations
  84.      required to install the software, and make the appropriate changes 
  85.      where they are required, and what directories to make, and where.

  87.      You are advised to follow the documentation in the same order, it will
  88.      save you from getting lost half way through.

  91. 3. I've dearchived TrapDoor and April, I've made the assigns, I now want to 
  92.    start sending messages, how do I do that ??
  93.  
  94.    - Before you start sending messages, you have to enter the database on 
  95.      your choice of BBS of your particular options.
  96.  
  97.      To start with, your session password will be in the format :
  98.  
  99.      ABMAIL                A - Initial of your first login name
  100.                            B - Initial of your second login name
  101.  
  102.      REMEMBER TO SPECIFY THE SESSION PASSWORD IN YOUR TRAPDOOR.CFG FILE,
  103.      OTHERWISE THIS WILL NOT WORK !! 
  104.  
  105.      You need to send a NETMAIL message to AREAFIX, the message format will
  106.      be in the format below :

  108.  
  109.      TO   : AREAFIX                      AT : <BBS address>
  110.      FROM : <Your name>                  AT : <Your address>
  111.      SUBJ : <YOUR SESSION PASSWORD>
  112.      ------------------------------------------------------------
  113.      %HELP

  117.      This is only a one line message, it is %HELP  The --- is used by 
  118.      AREAFIX to signify the end of your message.
  119.  
  120.      The lines TO, FROM, and SUBJ, are all added in the header which will
  121.      appear after the message has been saved, and the editor has been quit.
  122.  
  123.      You must enter all the information in the appropriate spaces.
  124.  
  125.      Once you have done this, click on <OK> and the message will be saved 
  126.      in the NETMAIL area.

  128.      Now you must select the EXPORT option in the main menu, this will
  129.      transfer the message to the appropriate directory ready
  130.      to be sent to your Boss system.

  133. 4. I've got a message to be sent to my BBS, how do I actually do that ?
  134.  
  135.    - Easy, All you do is exit from April, open up a shell, move to the 
  136.      directory SYS:MAIL/TRAPDOOR/BIN, and enter :
  137.  
  138.           trapdoor call boss  
  139.  
  140.      This will only work if the trapdoor.cfg file has been modified with 
  141.      your appropriate information, NAME, NODE, PASSWORD, etc and the
  142.      nodelist has been compiled with TRAPLIST.
  143.  
  144.      - - YIPEE!  You've sent your first message !!!! 8-)))))
  145.  
  146.      Now wait for about 30 seconds (1 minute usually guarantees it) for
  147.      the reply from AREAFIX to be generated and be available to be picked
  148.      up.

  150.      To get the reply enter :

  154.      Here, a message is received.

  157. 5. How do I read this message ?
  158.  
  159.    - reload April, and select IMPORT from the main menu, the reply will 
  160.      be found in the NETMAIL area, it will be from GECHO.

  162.      To read this message, double click on the NETMAIL area and then 
  163.      double click on the message.

  169. 6. How do I change my options ?

  171.    - To change your options, write a message to AREAFIX in the following
  172.      format :

  185.      other compressors available are ZIP, ARC, ZOO.

  195.    all the areas ??  How do I join them ??

  197.    - To join them, you first need a list available, to do this sent a 
  198.      NETMAIL to AREAMGR in the following format :

  232. SECTION 2. - Specific April Queries...

  236. NOTE :  When you ever change the configuration of April, remember to save
  237.         the new configuration, because April will not do save it 
  238.         automatically.  To save the configuration, select SAVE CONFIG in
  239.         the Config Menu.

  242. 1. When I first run April, I get a lot of requesters, and I've to 
  243.    answer a lot of questions, I don't know what to enter, help !
  244.  
  245.    - When you first run April, a requester will come up informing you
  246.      that the internal default settings will be used, on that click
  247.      <OK>.  Also click on the <OK to INSTALL> requester.
  248.  
  249.      Another screen will come up, telling you that you have to enter
  250.      your own settings, etc.  These settings are for you NOT the Boss sytem.

  252.      UserName  - <enter your own name>
  253.      BBSName   - <enter the name of your system>
  254.      PointNet  - Leave alone, if blank leave alone also.
  255.      Editor    - Choose your favourite editor, Use Memacs, Ed, Ced etc.
  256.      ConfigDir - If it says 'S:' leave alone.

  259.      NOTE :  The UserName and BBSName have to be the same as indicated
  260.              in the TrapDoor.cfg file.

  263.      Now, you are ready to edit the AreaList part of April 8-).

  267. 2. How do I get the AreaList in April the same as I have chosen ?

  269.    - There are two ways of doing this :
  270.  
  271.          a.  Just Poll the BBS and the Arealists will be created
  272.              automatically when April reads the Mail Packets.

  274.                  - NOT a good way of doing things !!!!!

  277.          b.  Enter The AreaList option in the Config Menu of April,
  278.              Select NEW, to indicate that you wish to create a new
  279.              Area.
  280.  
  281.              In the AREANAME box, you MUST enter the name of the area
  282.              EXACTLY as it appears in the Areas you have joined
  283.              Message generated by your Boss system.
  284.  
  285.              In Domain there should be FIDONET, do not change this.
  286.  
  287.              In UserName There should be your name, if not change it.

  289.              In Directory, it should read MAIL:

  291.              Click on the BBSinfo requester, Here is info about the
  292.              BBS where the Mail comes from / goes to  -  It should

  311. 3. How do I send mail to someone but not through the public echo

  314.    - Doing this is called NetMailing someone, it is done in the same
  315.      way as sending the messages to AreaMgr or AreaFix for changing
  316.      your configuration.

  319.      If, for example you wanted to ask me a question about April or
  320.      setting up a point system, then the message format would be as

  346. 4. You mentioned that I can call the BBS automatically, how do I do
  347.    that ??

  349.    - In the CONFIG menu in April, there is an option 'EXTERNAL PRG' This 
  350.      option allows you to call your Boss system automatically.
  351.  
  352.      a.  Select EXTERNAL PRG from the Config menu
  353.      b.  Select NEW.
  354.      c.  Enter 'Poll <name of BBS>' in the MENUNAME box
  355.      d.  Leave blank SHORTCUT box
  356.      e.  In the COMMAND box enter :
  357.  
  358.              RUN MAIL:TRAPDOOR/BIN/TRAPDOOR CALL BOSS
  359.  
  360.      f.  Select the box for 'program uses Custom Screen'
  361.  
  362.  
  363.      This method can be used for a number of other options,
  364.      eg, viewing the trapdoor.log file and the April.log file etc.
  365.      
  366.      Now to call your BBS, all you have to do is select 'Poll ...'
  367.      from the External menu, there is now no need to quit April and 
  368.      call from the shell.

  375.    -  All you have to do is send me a netmail, and I'll try and sort
  376.       out your problem.  Alternatively you can call either of the 
  377.       authors of the main packages (April and TrapDoor) for specific
  378.       queries.

  380.    -  Both April and TrapDoor have public areas in which people will 
  381.       be willing to help you, the authors are present also, so you 
  382.       can contact them this way also.  Ask your Boss if he / she 
  383.       can tag onto these FidoNET areas.

  393. REMEMBER : April and TrapDoor are Shareware, do us all a favour and 
  394.            register these packages when you can afford to.  The next 
  395.            version of April will be released in a few months, and the 
  396.            newest version of TrapDoor is already available from most 
  397.            BBS's.
